The Star Trek Shirt and it’s Imposter
Ghoul Mourning, Maniacs!
I’m back at KillerAphrodite.com, for Sci-Fi Month to tell you about something sci-fi oriented. So, beam down your inner Trekkie, we’ve got some chatting to do!
Star Trek (ever heard of it?!), was a science fiction television series, created by Gene Roddenberry. It originally aired from 1966 to 1969,with 68 episodes. I saw it in syndication in the seventies. Yep,I dug it!
I really liked the adventures of Captain Kirk and his crew. The alien make-ups were cool! The stories were exciting. The sound of brass and tympani in the show, usually meant some type of threat was coming. When there was a fight scene, it meant a whole different set of threatening music! I liked this show, quite a bit! Some of my favorite creatures from the series were The Salt Vampire, The Gorn, Ruk, Klingons etc. Basically, the stranger or meaner, the better! There was quite an interesting range of beings to choose from.
In 1973, Star Trek continued it’s adventures in an animated series. I was all over that, on a Saturday morning with Apple Jacks or whatever cereal we had.
There was quite a bit of Star Trek merchandise back then and I had one or two things at best. But I loved checking out the Star Trek Mego action figures on the toy store shelves! The card art was very well done and it always caught my eye.
What I did have, was a coloring book, a couple Star Trek comics and a very cool tee-shirt .I think my parents got it at a department store called “Sample” in 1975 or 1976(I’d be 5 or 6,then).
The shirt had blue sleeves and the body had illustrations of some of the U.S.S.Enterprise crew and aliens/villains, both in portrait and action scenes. I think it was front and back .It definitely had Kirk, Spock, Bones, The Gorn, some Klingons, and the ship itself.
I have to say that this shirt was definitely a favorite of mine!
I wore it to my grandmother’s on Easter Sunday and wound up getting into a fight with a kid wearing a Fonzie shirt who thought my shirt was lame. Just let that image sink in for a moment. I’m sure he had other brilliant points, but that was the one that I definitely recall.
A kid on my school bus had the Remco Star Trek toy phaser and we traded toys every now and then for a period of time. I got the phaser and he got my Star Trek comics for a few weeks.
When I had that cool thing back at our house along the river I ran around pretending to be part of the Star Trek crew, I fought aliens, defended lifeforms, etc.
What was even better, was I had a mustard colored mock turtle neck that was approximately the color of Captain Kirk’s! Oh yeah,I was getting in touch with my inner Kirk. Now I was rampaging around looking for alien lifeforms to smooch!! Set phasers to “stun”, and lips to “smolder”!!
I wore that mock turtle neck so much, it needed constant washing.
Hey,all that rampaging makes you all sweaty! Well,it’s off to the laundry.
Something happened to the shirt… It came out of the wash all marble-ized looking with waves of dark red all over it! Basically,it became a mock turtle neck tiedye shirt!
I was amazed. I thought it was even more Trek looking than it previously was. I could see Captain Kirk having his turn that way, from an alien atmosphere! Oh,this was great!! Or,maybe not…
My mother was not as impressed as I was with the shirt’s enhancement of radical, red swirls. In fact, the shirt was now designated as “for home use only”. But it was so cool! I couldn’t just let it stay locked up at home! I mean, there was new civilizations to explore, new aliens to engage, new girls to smooch, I mean-well no, that’s exactly what I meant…
There was a back and forth on this and I couldn’t persuade mom to see just how awesome a shirt like that was. I was dying to wear it to school! I had to! I did…
Somehow, I got on the bus, wearing that mustard yellow mock turtle neck, with the dark red swirls, undetected. I have no clue as to how that happened. Maybe it was sheer luck or just the morning rush of getting my three sisters and I on the school buses.
I went to school wearing my “Trek” shirt, and had a blast! Probably too much fun, because I remember having to eat lunch in the corner. Well, you gotta live once in a while, right?
Well, when I got home, I tried to evade my mother. Someone must have tipped her off! Someone blew me in! She got a hold of that shirt, chewed me out and that was the end of that.
Although my adventures in that glorious mustard yellow shirt were short-lived, outside of home, they were very memorable. I’m sure my single mindedness on the matter caused a few headaches. But I really thought it was an amazing “Trek” themed look.
