Cinema Nouveau recently launched its Live from Broadway series, and is excited to announce the release of the second title in the series, SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ – Another first from SA’s only dedicated art house, and one for the whole family!
New York and London based Supervision Media and Broadway Worldwide Inc of New York, have signed an exclusive multi-year licensing arrangement to bring four hit Broadway musicals to cinema screens across the globe, so if you missed Memphis in January, make sure you don’t miss out on SMOKEY JOE’S CAFÉ, screening exclusively on 2, 4 and 5 February 2012.
“Our recent Opera and National Theatre Live series have been really well received, so we are thrilled to present our audiences with Broadway, a series of four exciting and popular musical productions guaranteed to ignite our big screens and get audiences dancing in their seats,” says Raksha Singh, Ster-Kinekor Select and Commercial manager.
MEMPHIS is Broadway’s 2010 Tony Award® winning Best Musical, and was captured live in performance at Broadway’s renowned Shubert Theatre in New York City. Bursting off the stage with explosive dancing, irresistible songs and a thrilling tale of fame and forbidden love, this incredible journey is filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll.
The remaining two world-renowned titles that audiences can look forward to for the first time in South Africa and exclusive to Cinema Nouveau are:
JEKYLL AND HYDE THE MUSCIAL – This was the longest running show in the history of Broadway’s Plymouth Theatre, with over 1500 performances. The show won a legion of repeat visitors, dubbed by the press as “Jekkies”, with some hardcore fans having seen the show hundreds of times. Performers as diverse as The Moody Blues, Liza Minnelli and Johnny Mathis have recorded songs from the show.
PUTTING IT TOGETHER – Is award winning composer/ lyricist Stephen Sondheim’s humorous, poignant and sophisticated musical “review” of material taken from a number of his original musicals. Interweaving the emotions and relationships of live guests attending a Manhattan cocktail party, PUTTING IT TOGETHER includes numbers from Anyonecan Whistle, Follies and Sweeney Todd.
