There is probably not a person alive who has not for a moment wished they had super powers. In fact, it is probably closer to the truth to say that many of us have spent countless hours fantasising about what we would do if we ever, by some stroke of fate, developed super powers. This is the question director Josh Trank has sought to answer in his debut feature film, Chronicle releasing at Ster-Kinekor Theatres on Friday, 17 February 2012.
Chronicle is an epic sci-fi action-drama told through the eyes of Andrew – a “punching bag” at home and at school – who starts to videotape his tumultuous life on camera. On the way home from a local rave, Andrew and his two friends, Matt and Steve come upon a deep dark hole and do what any self-respecting teen would – they throw caution to the wind and plunge into it to explore its dark, dank corners in the hopes of finding something.
They get more than they bargained for as the former social bottom-feeders emerge from the hole with powerful superhuman abilities leaving them invulnerable and further up the social ladder than ever before.
The found-footage style (as though you are watching a home video) gives a realistic edge to this sci-fi hit film. The audience experiences the action firsthand as the three high-school teens play around with their newly found powers, mainly for mischief and personal gain. But as the three friends test the limits of their powers and begin to embrace their darker sides, they find their lives spinning out of control.
Keep a keen eye on the action scenes and you may even spot a glimpse of Cape Town as film crews spent a substantial amount of time on set in our very own Mother City; with the production design team working overtime to create the ‘look’ of an American suburbia.
Chronicle, which was shot in Cape Town last year, has made it into the no. 1 spot at the US box office and has experienced unforeseen box office success across the globe as it claims the top spot in a number of international markets, including the UK, Australia and Hong Kong.
The film showcases the best upcoming young talent starring Dane Dehaan (True Blood), Alex Russell, Michael B Jordan, Ashley Hinshaw and Michael Kelly (The Adjustment Bureau).
