Thrilled is what Ster-Kinekor Theatres feels about hosting the 33rd Durban International Film Festival at Ster-Kinekor Theatres Musgrave and Cinema Nouveau Gateway from the 20th to the 29th of July 2012. With 106 screenings taking place between the two Ster-Kinekor venues, this year’s festival is certain to make a big impact in Kwazulu Natal!
Several themes will be present throughout the festival putting Africa in the Spotlight – with films such as Elelwani by Ntshavheni wa Luruli starring Florence Masebe, which will be opening the festival as well as the delightful story of animal kingdom ubuntu in the pioneering 3D animation Adventures in Zambezia, which will close the Durban International Film Festival. Contemporary European films will also showcase with films such as Le Havre by Aki Kaurusmäki and Michael Glawogger’s Whore’s Glory from Austria. There will be a focus on French Film – such as the powerful biopic on Burmese leader Aung San Sui Kyi, The Lady. Of special mention is a piece by Global Cinema – which brings the celebrated Beasts of the Southern Wild directed by Benh Zeitlin. Eco-issues will also be explored in films such as Bitter Seeds and LoveMEATender. Each theme highlights film makers’ talents and passion in comedies, documentaries, drama and story-telling.
Top picks include: Searching for Sugarman – The Rodriguez Story and Beasts of the Southern Wild which are exclusive to Ster-Kinekor Cinema Nouveau, To Rome with Love – releasing 24 august 2012 at Cinema Nouveau nationwide, 2 Days in New York, Rebel Sessions, Surfing and Shark with many more films and documentaries to entertain, educate and provide some food for thought.
