National Theatre Live back to the big screen!
National Theatre Live returns to South Africa exclusively at Cinema Nouveau theatres for its fourth season from October 13th, bringing the magic of live theatre to the big screen. Launching the series with the acclaimed play The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time, which has been described by Variety as, “Nothing short of a triumph,” National Theatre Live will screen at Cinema Nouveau theatres in Gateway, Cavendish, V&A, Rosebank and Brooklyn.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in Night-Time, an adaption by Simon Stephens, will broadcast in Cinema Nouveau theatres on 13th, 14th, 17th and 18th of October. The play is about Christopher, a 15-year-old who is found standing beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, placing him under suspicion. The dog has been speared with a garden fork and it is now seven minutes after midnight. Christopher – a sheltered boy who distrusts strangers – begins a detective’s journey to solve the crime. His world is turned upside down, often with humorous results.
The Last of the Haussmans, a new play by Stephan Beresford, has been described as “a savage portrait of a family that’s losing its grip”. The feisty and anarchic high society Judy Haussman holds court in a deteriorating Art Deco house on the Devon coast, while remaining in spirit with the Ashrams of the 1960s. After an operation she is joined by her children and granddaughter as well as some colourful characters, including local doctor Peter and Daniel, a troubled teenager who uses the family’s swimming. The group share the summer months together drinking through the day, revealing infatuations, resentments, free love and failure. Starring the award-winning Julie Walters, the play will screen at Cinema Nouveau on 17th, 18th, 21st and 22nd of November.
The third title in the series is Timon of Athens, which will run on 8th, 9th, 12th and 13th of December. This play is the story of a wealthy friend to the rich and powerful, a patron of the arts and an ostentatious host Timon of Athens. Surrounded by free loaders and sycophants, he outspends his resources but reassures his loyal steward that all will be well. But when he calls upon his associates for help, they hang him out to dry. This is the story of the literal and emotional wasteland of a morally bankrupt Athens.
The Magistrate – staring John Lithgow (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Shrek, 3rd Rock from the Sun)is a hilarious comedy about amiable magistrate Posket, who marries Agatha. Little does he realise that she is five years older than what she has lead him to believe and that her son is five years older than what she has lead him to believe. The result is a deceptive comedy with delightful indignities and outrageous mishaps, which will be screened on 23rd, 24th, 27th and 28th of February 2013.
