Book Review: Shady Palms by Allen Dusk

Good night, sleep tight…

A shady motel on the outskirts of San Diego has a very bad reputation.  Dead hookers, mob hits, drugs, terrorism… you name it, Shady Palms is the hot-spot for anything and everything illegal.  Owner, Sanjay Patel makes a relatively good living off of the motel, but it’s what happens behind the scenes that’s really raking in the money for him.  However, when he allows a terrorist to rent a room, he never imagined what would happen in the upcoming months. As one problem follows another problem, Sanjay feels himself getting deeper into trouble with every day passing, but it’s not until the shit truly hits the fan when he realises just how bad karma can bite you in the ass…

Shady Palms by Allen Dusk is not the type of book I originally thought it was, here I thought it was going to be one of those boring crime novels that was predictable enough to give you the name of the killer from the first chapter…  Boy was I in for a surprise!  Shady Palms may have its law enforcement, its whores and its criminals, but it’s what lurks between the sheets that will truly give horror fanatics something to squirm about.  Yes, we have our death scenes (some much more creative than others) and we have our hardcore sex scenes, but when you think about the absolute B-Movie potential that lies between the covers of Allen Dusk‘s Shady Palms, you’ll be pleasantly satisfied by the end of the book.

One of my guilty pleasures in life is to watch (and re-watch) natural-horrors, in other words films like Ticks, Eight Legged Freaks, Dragon Wasps and the like, so B-Movie brilliance is one of my weaknesses.  There’s nothing like a little urban myth to get a girl happy and Allen Dusk played exceptionally well by getting the essence of an urban myth and fuelling a worldwide fear.  Shady Palms was fun, crude and downright gory, I loved it!

I know I’m gushing about the book, but I won’t give any spoilers.  This is one of those books that the reader will simply have to read for themselves and discover the treasure trove of awesome…  by giving anything away, I’d be doing you an injustice.  My suggestion is thus to get your hands on it if you love your horror absolutely original, your childhood fears escalated to an extent and you love squirming at the thought of being killed by bugs.  It’s worth it and it’s perfect for Halloween!  So, click on the image and go buy the book, you won’t regret it and I am almost 100% sure that it would become a must-read every Halloween.
