After a terrible paragliding accident, a quadriplegic aristocrat (François Cluzet who plays Philippe) hires a young rebellious man (Omar Sy who plays Driss) as his caretaker against everyone’s wishes. As time goes on, Philippe and Driss’ friendship grows stronger and for the first time, Philippe feels alive again. Pushing his employer to his limits, Driss tried to make Philippe see that his disadvantages in life isn’t half as bad as it could be and Philippe shows Driss in turn that there is much more to him than what meets the eye. The Intouchables is a glorious French film that would make you laugh and cry. Yes, you may feel sympathy for Philippe in his state of disability, but what makes The Intouchables so great is that they can make fun of it without it feeling wrong or mean. It shows two different worlds colliding together and a friendship growing out of it. However, what’s probably the best thing about this movie is how real it is. The chemistry between the actors are unmistakable and the story is just wonderful, not to mention that the directing by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano is just exceptional. It’s a fantastic film with a lot [...]

Set during the 2nd Anglo-Boer War, a devoted husband and respected military officer decides to go home and protect his family when he hears about the British invaders’ Scorched Earth Policy. Being marked as a traitor, he and his sons sign the neutrality act and lay down their arms, only to be called back to duty by the Boer Army. Not willing to take the risk, his sons set off to find a new farm in the Cape Colony, but are captured before they could get there and faces execution for high treason. Verraaiers (Traitors) is one of the most gripping and accurate accounts of the 2nd Anglo-Boer War, which shows not only the brutality of the British during this time, but also the desperation of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek as they fought for their freedom. This historic drama is based upon real events with a good backstory in place for those who aren’t fully aware of what the Anglo-Boer Wars were about, as well as bringing to light the terrifying Scorched Earth Policy that brought the Afrikaner’s army to their knees. Although the film is in Afrikaans, the subtitles make it possible for English speaking folks to enjoy it.
Skip Shea (director of Microcinema and Out of the Night) is back with the much anticipated sequel to the fabulous short film, Microcinema, and this one’s called Ave Maria. What makes these particular short films so riveting is the subtleness of the storyline. Another appealing factor is how Skip Shea portrays female vigilante justice and how delightfully bloody it can be if done right… I do like a good castration as much as the next psycho, so in my books this is an excellent short film. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished and unfortunately the cinematography of Ave Maria is not up to par as far as I’m concerned. With a little shaky camera work (not so much as to make you sea sick), it takes away a bit of the movie, but otherwise, I must say that it is a superb sequel and I really do wish that Skip Shea will turn this story into a full feature film. I’m sure all of the horror reviewers will agree that it’s got potential. If you want to see what I’m on about and why you need to try and find Ave Maria and Microcinema, check out the trailer after [...]

I thought I’d do something different today with the film Tomorrow You’re Gone and I do hope you all enjoy it. Instead of your run-of-the-mill type of review, I thought I’d show proof as to why I feel the way I feel about it and give you all a taste of what other critics are reporting about it as well. It’s my way of creating a bit of modern film noir on the blog, so hopefully you’ll enjoy it. That being said, perhaps it would be best to start off with a synopsis of the movie first. Synopsis: “Charlie Rankin, recently released from prison, seeks vengeance for his jail-house mentor William “The Buddha” Pettigrew. Along the way, he meets the ethereal, yet streetwise, Florence Jane. They embark on a unlikely road trip, careening towards an unlikely redemption and uncertain resolution.” As you can see, the synopsis looks hopeful, unfortunately what the film tries to do kind of gets lost somewhere between production, editing and the release of the movie. Anyway, on to the review snippets you might find interesting: “Long on mood but short on just about everything else, this would-be thriller directed by David Jacobson is as boring as it is [...]

The Master was written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and stars Joaquin Pheonix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. That being said, this is not the type of film that you can describe as being a popcorn flick, because it’s really heavy viewing. Whether an ordinary viewer will be able to sit through the whole flick without getting bored is also highly unlikely, even though all the BIG critics raved about the movie. However, I’m a consumer and a viewer, and I will not be endorsing films that my readers will not find enjoyable. As a result, I cannot say that The Master will appeal to a lot of people that read Killer Aphrodite Entertainment… it sure as hell didn’t appeal to me. Synopsis: “After returning from the Second World War, having witnessed many horrors, a charismatic intellectual creates a faith-based organization in an attempt to provide meaning to his life. He becomes known as “The Master”. His right-hand man, a former drifter, begins to question both the belief system and The Master as the organization grows and gains a fervent following.” Don’t get me wrong, the acting was brilliant, but even that couldn’t save The Master from being [...]

Featuring a stand-out performance from Daisy Lowe in her first lead role, CONFINE is a taut psychological thriller that hits cinemas, DVD and On Demand on 1st July 2013, through 20:20 Films. CONFINE marks Daisy Lowe’s first foray into feature film acting, performing alongside Eliza Bennett (Nanny McPhee, Inkheart) and “Game of Thrones” star Alfie Allen. The film centres around Pippa (Lowe), a physically and emotionally scarred former model living as a recluse in her upmarket Georgian flat. When a heist taking place in the same building goes wrong, Pippa’s home is broken into by the charismatic Kayleigh (Bennett). Pippa is taken hostage by this unpredictable and volatile thief who’s looking for a temporary hideout, but when outside forces close in Kayleigh takes a darker path to get her way. As the confined space becomes a fighting ring and a tense struggle ensues, Pippa must learn how to stand up for herself once again. Stylishly directed (and written) by relative newcomer, Tobias Tobbell, it features slick performances and a plot that builds until tension reaches fever pitch, CONFINE will be sure to turn up the heat when it’s released in cinemas, on DVD and On Demand this summer.
THE X FEST FILM FESTIVAL Chapter 6 14 – 20 June Labia Theatre, 68 Orange Street, Gardens, Cape Town www.xfest.org South Africa’s wildest film festival returns for it’s 6th year, bringing you feature films, documentaries and short films you’re unlikely to see in any cinema. From tattoos and Gothic culture, to vampires, box wars, junkies and a whole lot in between. (Line-up and screening times below) Audience give-aways include R5,000 worth of tattoo vouchers from THE TATTOOER, bottles of SAILOR JERRY RUM and specials at the bar, as well as horror DVDs from Ster Kinekor. The annual X Fest Film Festival was created 6 years ago from parent event the South African HorrorFest, as a way to fill a long standing cinematic cultural gap. By scouring the globe and receiving submissions of interesting, rare, classic and new movies, documentaries & short films that push the boundaries and divert from the norm (or won’t find a place in mainstream South African cinemas), the X Fest made it a priority to reach a neglected audience who prefer their entertainment to be of a more alternative, challenging, intense, extreme, or out-of-the-ordinary nature. This can include experimental work, controversial or taboo subjects, underground and cult films, plus a [...]

Blaylock Publisher: Titan Books Published: 25 January 2013 Genre: Steampunk Rating: 8/10 It is the summer of 1883 and Professor Langdon St. Ives – brilliant but eccentric scientist and explorer – is at home in Aylesford with his family. However, a few miles to the north a steam launch has been taken by pirates above Egypt Bay; the crew murdered and pitched overboard. In Aylesford itself a grave is opened and possibly robbed of the skull. The suspected grave robber, the infamous Dr. Ignacio Narbondo, is an old nemesis of Langdon St. Ives. When Dr. Narbondo returns to kidnap his four-year-old son Eddie and then vanishes into the night, St. Ives and his factotum Hasbro race to London in pursuit… Well, I’m sure you can see I’ve had this book in my possession for a while, but it was intentional not to review it until now. You see, I wanted to read the other books in the series, which were republished by Titan Books, before I delved into reviewing this baby. The reason for that is simple, I’m not a steampunk reader in general and it would have been completely unfair of me to judge the book without [...]

Blaylock Publisher: Titan Books Published: 22 March 2013 Genre: Steampunk Rating: 7/10 Within the magical gears of Lord Kelvin’s incredible machine lies the secret of time. The deadly Dr. Ignacio Narbondo would murder to possess it and scientist and explorer Professor Langdon St. Ives would do anything to use it. For the doctor it means mastery of the world and for the professor it means saving his beloved wife from death. A daring race against time begins… Lord Kelvin’s Machine by James P. Blaylock was originally published in 1992 and now republished by Titan Books, so let me just point out one thing… Look at that fantastic cover! Funny enough, even though it’s a modernised cover, it kind of fits the book perfectly. Okay, but enough about the look, let’s talk about the book. Once again we have Professor Langdon St. Ives battling against the bad doctor and this time there are a lot more at stake. Gripping, this book is a little different to Homunculus, but it still has its moments. Again, we are presented with the imaginative world of steampunk, but this time we have a little time travel included, which is kind of awesome if you [...]
